The first Fairtrade roses went on sale in the UK in February 2004.
The roses came from Kenya, where they are grown on six farms which
have been certified to comply with Fairtrade employment, social
and environmental standards.
As well as meeting Fairtrade standards, the premium will be used
to fund further improvements for the workers and the local communities
and empower them to play a more active role in farm management issues
that affect them.
A joint body comprising elected representatives of workers is established on each farm and these will agree how
the premium is to be used.
